Yes - I have posted some notes above.
At fully closed the engine died.
At 1/2 turn out the engine died.
At 1 turn out the engine idled at 2200rpm.
At 3/4 turn out the engine idled at 2000rpm.
The idle adjustment screw is all the way out, not affecting idle at all.
The throttle spring is all the way closed against the throttle stop screw.

Currently I am at 4500rpm idle. I must have not seated the carbs back on after the last time I removed them. I can't think of anything I could have done when I moved the needle up yesterday that would have caused such a dramatic difference.

I am thinking that I need to start from square one again. I have not personally done the clear tube test and have not personally checked valve clearance.

I got a quote from a local shop that has cylinder heads for around $300. Is that reasonable to correct the exhaust port and spark plug issue?

I have not bought a head for a while.
Compare price against ebay. Local prices should be a little less.
You will need one with new valve stem seals and valves that seal.
You will also need to set valve lash/shim the head. The valve train
on your head can be transferred to another head.

Looks like you have carb holders coming. Before you can get the carbs tuned however you have to do a valve check and make sure they are in spec. Next I would check the timing. If points set the points to spec. Might even through in a new set of spark plugs.

I'm going through the same thing on the Z1. I got some carb cleaner in the spray can. Ain't what it used to be but I found Valvoline carb cleaner to be a bout as nasty and environmentally unfriendly as one is going to get in a spay can today.

Clean clean clean. There is a VM chart on here someplace that tells you which ports to block when you spray carb cleaner. The clear tube test is a must do. You will be surprised.

I think the holders I have are ok. They do not seem to be hard or brittle. I will be delivering the bike to a mechanic to handle the valve clearance and determine if I need a new head.

I took my carbs off last night and will follow the chart for spray in/spray out.

Similar to you as well...I left my petcock in the On position the other night and came out to probably 1 gallon of fuel on my garage floor. The air filters were full of fuel as well.

Regarding the clear tube test...Did you buy the tool from z1e or make one? Where does one get the screw/nozzle for the clear tube?

Personally I made one with a bowl drain plug/screw. Drilled a hole for a small piece of copper tube and soldered it. Then I went to the hardware store found a brass male connector of about the right size for the tube. cut in half and drilled it out to fit over the copper tube and soldered it in. This was my second attempt. One the first one I used a bigger copper tube and it worked just fine. But then it disappeared so I made another. The second one works better or maybe just looks better.

I've always been weary of soldering. Z1E has tool for $11.95 I'll probably just be a chump and buy one.

In our much younger, poorer days we used clear aquarium tubing of the correct OD that it would just sort of "screw in" to the hole for the drain plug. Not elegant but it worked fine.

Does anyone have this chart bookmarked? I found it yesterday but cannot find it now. I think maybe Patton posted it?
