The pilot screws are under the black caps with the buggered slot showing on the front where the carbs clamp to the head.

The idle speed stop screw seems to be angling down from the top, between the two carbs.

I don't know if it applies to these carbs, but some KZ400's had the idle speed screw with a remote knob. The knob was attached to a long spring-like cable to turn the actual idle speed screw which was buried between the carbs (like Ed said). If the cable broke and someone got rid of the knob, you may have to get a flashlight and do a hard reach between the carbs to adjust speed.

If you can search the parts diagram somewhere, it might show it better.

Here it is, part number 13, if your bike is a Kz400B2. But your photos don't even seem to show the bracket. From the drawing it looks like the little knob-bracket would be mounted to the top of the left carb, on the rear left screw. Your photo don't show one there. Might have to get more specific on what model you have.

It looks like the idle speed rod just angles down, without that remote turn mechanism.

Here is what the idle adjuster looks like on my '79 KZ400. Please excuse the general (i.e. messy) state of the bike; I got caught in the rain last time I was out. (The carbs and boots will be replaced this winter.)

It looks like your bracket was removed somewhere along the way. Note the two screws that secure the left edge of the carb cap: the one at the front is noticeably longer than the one at the back. I would bet that one was originally on the back and was used to attach the idle knob bracket.

Thanks everyone! I'll hopefully still be able to adjust the idle as is. Will check later when back at home. Will also adjust the pilot screws whilst at it. I assume it's in my manual but if anyone has time and wants to share feel free :)

Thanks again!
