I'm extremely happy that I'm finally riding my 77' KZ1000A I've been working on steadily.

I ended up using the K&N Dual Pod air filters on it. And with the jetting sizes changed at the Pilot to #20 and Main to #120, the bike runs fairly decent. After riding it now for 40 to 50 miles, It appears off idle when starting off in 1st gear, there may be a little stumble but not too much. Just give it a little more gas when taking off.

With that in mind, would screwing in the fuel mixture screws ( stock VM26 ) clean this up a little?

Or changing the Pilot Jets back to 17.5 stock be the direction I would want to take?

Other than that, bike is running pretty decent :) :)

Any input from anybody ? I'm just trying to get an idea whether it would be better to "turn in" the fuel mixture screw or change back to the "stock" 17.5 Pilot Jets.

Again, bike runs pretty well considering but maybe a little fat at take off idle ?

The mixture screws should be able to dial in between the next size jet. If they don't, the jet is too big or too small.

Steve, I think what your saying if I "turn in" the mixture screw too much, probably to where it's only 1/2 turn out from seated ( less fuel ), then probably going back to the stock 17.5 Pilot and replacing the 20 Pilot which is too big ? Then the fuel mixture screw would probably be set at least at a full turn out or even more depending on how the bike reacts?

Basically. As long as the engine reacts to the adjustment, the circuit is working. Depending on the carbs, the standard settings should be applied. Mikuni says for the 33's it should be 1/2 to 3/4 turns. The 28's are 1 1/4-1/2. Yours are different but the base setting called for is where you start. If a lot more the jets are too small, a lot less, they're too big. (air jets are the reverse) The main jets WILL have a small influence on the idle circuit. That's why you start with the pilots, then move on to larger mains if needed. Go back to stock and start over. One thing at a time. I always have the needle at the center position. Once I have the top and bottom close, I'll set the needle accordingly to fine tune them for altitude, etc.

I've read and also found that it is best to tune from the main jet down. Get wot performance first, then mid throttle, etc...
