On the advice of the torch and pitchfork crowd I've started a thread. It may not be a very good thread but it's mine.

Recently traded a .40 Cal pistol for an 82 750 CSR. Got it non running with keys and clear title. Bike is 95% complete and I'd say in about 80% condition. 16k miles. Missing air box, emissions crap, a mirror, the turn signal relay and associated wiring and some of the baffles in the stock mufflers. Has those shitty emgo pod filters the clueless kids put on bikes nowadays to make them 'cafe racers'. Runs like a gut shot dog.

My plan is to put better filters on the carbs and swap in the Canadian OEM needles and needle jets mentioned in some 8 year old thread I stumbled upon along with 125 mains and 42.5 pilots. My understanding is that this will make this bike run decently, which would be a drastic improvement.

A side note on ham-fisted hammer mechanics:

The cross-eyed mouth breather that put his clammy dick beaters on this bike before me should be shot, hanged, beheaded, shot again and then made to watch Gray's Anatomy with my wife until he shoots and hangs himself again for good measure. The stock coil was discarded with the air box and two gigantic automotive coils the size of 16 oz beer cans were zip tied to the battery box along with a huge ceramic resistor. The secondary air injection ports were not blocked off, nor were they at least linked with a hose. No, they were removed, the reed valves flipped upside down and the spigots replaced so that hot exhaust gasses bark out from them. Today I vacuum bled the brake. The fluid looked like coffee and was the consistency of syrup.

Anyway..... the road ahead is long and fraught with scraped knuckles and newly invented swear words but my primary objective is to get the fueling and induction right. I'm no stranger to carburetor work, just a stranger to this particular bike and the bs34. It seems tuneable enough, but the bulk of my experience is in the bst series mikuni carbs and the keihin carbs on the old sohc Honda 750's.

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Failing this endeavor I will try to source a stock air box and go from there, but since I've already ordered the jet needles and needle jets I may as well give pods a shot.

I like the way you put that. Cuss words aside of course. I use to have a sign at my drive way. Trespassers and thieves will be cheerfully beaten to a pulp, hog tied and turned over to the Sheriff.

Sounds like you were left with quite a few gremlins to weed out. It may be quicker to get the airbox and go back to stock in the end, it seems rare for pods to ever work well. I'm not familiar with your bike at all so it may be a different story. Have any pictures of what your working with?
- good luck

There she is. Not a bad looking bike. If I can't get pods to work I'll go find an air box.

OK.... did the aforementioned mods to the carbs and wow what a difference. Not perfect but I was able to ride it. Fun little bike. Needs some tuning and should be good to go.

Ok, as if anyone cares I have updates.

Mounted and wired in stock coil, removed bubba contraption.

Working on block off plates for smog pipes, just need to drill

Bike was still running poorly at times, better at others. Turns out the e clip is missing from the #2 choke plunger and it just vibrates in and out depending on its mood. It would idle all crazy, bog at wot.... hoping I have that all sorted out, once I get my replacement petcock I'll be able to test and tune more. Got a set of uni pods, they definitely work better than the cones, air jet and slide diaphragm passages are now unobstructed.

I was never of the opinion that a bike with cv carbs could run well without an air box but this experiment may show its possible.

Yeah it don't look bad, I struggle daily with selling it, which was the original intent. Garage is getting crowded tho, and I can't bear to part with the Honda I built or my daily Rider death machine, so just like in nature, the slowest of the pack must be culled.

Also missing the ball detents that keep the choke operating rod in the open or closed position. Gonna drill out a few zerk fitting and use the springs and balls from them.

Well the zerk fitting guts worked for a minute but the ball was too small and got bound up.

Jets r us didn't have any parts for bs34 carbs.
