Okay, I have a 1978 KZ1000 that I just finished putting back together and tried to start this morning. So far I:
--Cleaned the #@ap out of all four carbs
--Put rebuild kits on all of them
--New plugs
--New battery
--New main and middle wiring looms
The bike has, I think, VM26 carbs on it. Also, the previous owner had installed a DYNA S ignition in it. Also, the bike came with four pods for the carbs, as well as four into one Vance and Hines exhaust. I put fresh gas in it this morning, and all I got was some backfiring out of the carbs and the exhaust. When the exhaust backfired, I had a good six inches or so of flame come shooting out of it, so I know I am getting spark somewhere :woohoo:

I am pretty sure there are no air leaks, but this seems more like a timing issue to me...what do you all think?

Crap, I just figured it out... I remember after reading the docs for the dyna s, that it seemed like the two signal wires were messed up, so I switched them. Just now I went in the garage and put them back like they were, And I think you can guess what happened next... it started! Died out, but it did run a couple of times...just need to go thru the tuning process now.
Since I have everybody attention...one thing that is driving me nuts is those old *Fred Flintstone* carburetors. I think the carbs are VM26, but not sure (I measured the throat on the intake side and it was 27MM?) As I said, chemical dip, blow out, carb cleaner, blow out, multiple ultrasonic baths, and you guessed it, blown out yet again. Rebuild kit... but the problem I am having is leaking out of three out of four drain screws, not dripping, just wet. Ironically, it did not do this before I rebuilt them ! Is there something different I should be doing? The kits were Sudco and seemed ok.

One last question... I still need to wet set the float levels, but have been having difficulty finding a fitting... but my question is.. does it matter if you do the wet set to the whole rack, or individual carbs, assuming you could figure out the fuel supply issue by going with one carb at a time?

How did you manage to find the right rebuild kit if you don't even know what model your carbs are?

I assume that you replaced the o-rings on the drain screws when you rebuilt them? Perhaps they simply don't fit. Most of the carb rebuild kits out there are pretty half-assed if you ask me. The big blue Harbor Freight nitrile o-ring assortment probably has some that will fit.

Just took a guess... seems to be the one, but I only used gaskets, needle and valve and orings. No jets or jet needles. I have a HF oring kit, will try that tomorrow. I hear you on the quality issue, but what can you do.
