I picked up this 1981 KZ1000J today. Not that I need another motorcycle but the price was right. The seller picked it up at a Kidney Foundation auctions, sold it to me and made a few bucks.

The previous owner (before the guy I just bought it from) had it stored well and there's not too much rust and corrosion, considering Hawaii's climate.

The bike runs, however the airbox is gone. I remember that CV carbs are difficult to jet with pods. Does someone here have jetting recommendations or a jet kit recommendation? I imagine it will get a V&H or Kerker pipe eventually.

Thanks, Mike

Just had mine off this weekend to clean my carbs. I think it had 127.5 mains.
I have it all written down at home and the bike runs real good with K&N in stock air box with a Vance and Hines 4 into 1 pipe.
I will post all of the jet sizes for you later today.

BTW CV carbs are hard to tune with pods like you said because they use vacuum pressure to open. One thing to make them more responsive is to get different springs or shorten the ones on there. bigger Pilots are required as well as mains.

Drop the bowls and see what's in it. Probably jetted already........I'd start 40/140 jets. BTW, that 81 J looks real nice!

I posted that same question here recently for an 1170 ELR, IIRC it was on 135 for an 1100, but I guess 137.5 - 140 is what I'm going for now first attempt.

On this i'll be running in so with a kerker comp k and pods so I expect some tuning. This one I might carb tune on a dyno, with a 550 I can get a feel of it without running out of road all the time, but those 1100 's are so arm-wrenching I need my own racetrack...or a dyno.
