I did 9.89 on a buell 1125r, which has about the same rear horsepower as this kz should, so maybe it is the 190 rear tire, and the gear ratios that let me do that, or maybe I am secretly a master racer! "probably not"

I am going to get it, and if I don't like it I will sell it for a profit, but I am really curious now what times I will manage on our local 1/4 mile.

I think this little website will be useful for reference. The guy definitely seems to know what he's talking about.

www.oldkawman.com/oknd.html

Not sure why but my links tend to not show up. Gives a good run-down on power figures and such, but no mention of any shaft-driven models in his words....probably a good reason for that.

Guy I ran against a few years ago had a turbo 'Busa. He did a 9.89 at our track, I still have my "lose" timeslip from that run  ....so 9.89 from a Buell is pretty amazing....

The T-'Busa's terminal speed was 151.6 mph.... what was yours?

Ours is 1320 - IHRA sanctioned now (used to be NHRA).

If I remember correctly my trap speed was was 141, and the track was a 1320. I have a long history in trials, and endurecross so maybe all those years of learning fine clutch control helps me with drag racing?

I had all of the safety requirements like having the bolts safety wired, lines secured, etc. All they said after the run was "That was a nice pass, buells sure are amazing bikes"

Is it possible to fit a larger rear tire on a shaft kz?

Had a MU90 R16 Dunlop E3 previously on my 1100A, which barely squeezed between the rear brake stay and the wheel engagement gear on the differential unit, to get it off the bike.

Have a narrower MT90 R16 E3 mounted now, which installed nicely on the bike. :)

Metric max width in a stock ST likely is a narrow 140 mm - I say narrow because some manufacturer's 140 tires are actually much wider. Maybe try a 140/80,...
First things that will interfere are the brake stay and next the shaft housing....on chain drive KZ's, the widest tire you can usually get in between a stock frame is a 170...

You should pass. You're talking dyno #s, $ amounts , and track times. Any one of those factors is debatable, but combined that's a very slippery slope. You seem to have experience but then you ask for confirmation on hp. 167 hp is as much power as bikes with twice the engineering.

This is a bike with that kind of hp.

The bike you are considering can't touch a 167 hp bike. If you buy the bike, it will be for the wrong reasons.

Mrsuperbuckets wrote: HELLLOOOOOO everyone, this will be my first post here so please be nice to me :)

A man I have been doing some yard work for locally saw me riding my xr250l, and asked if I liked motorcycles, I told him I loved motorcycles. He told me that he had bought a 1980 kz1000 shaft brand new, he then had a laundry list of work done to the engine, such as a wiseco 1261 big block with 10.5:1 compression, welded crank, 33mm smoothbores, heads ported and polished, then had the transmission strengthened, a heavy duty clutch pack, and springs installed, andrews x8 cams, 4-1 headers, kerker muffler, and stiffer springs. He told me he had it dynoed at 167 hp, and 121 tq back in the early 90's when he did all of these modifications.

Now I know that a stock kz1000 makes about 90hp stock or so, so even with all of these mods those numbers seem high to me, but I am an expert in other manufacturers, and engines not these ol' oz's so what do all of you fine folk think, do these numbers sound right?

He offered to sell the bike to me for 2,000 since he is in his 80's, and says he is too old to ride so he wants it to go to someone who will ride it.
