1981 KZ1000 -- The top of the engine has this breather cover, but it basically seems like an empty hole under it. Is there supposed to be some kind of filter in there? It's just odd, it seems like wasted space.

Probably the same as my KZ650 - just an empty cavity under the cover. Ed

This is on top of the case, not the head. The cover has a hole for a hose which I think leads to the carbs, and there's a single bolt down the center holding the cover in place.

Are you talking about the PCV, oil separator assembly?

This cover (14070), on the top side of the crankcase, and the hole that it covers.

Ok. I think if you had a service manual it would explain that whole thing.

Nothing in it. No need for a filter since it is connected to the air box. It's purpose is to let any oil drop out of the crankcase blowby and allow it to return to the crankcase through the drain hole. That way the air that makes it to the air box will have far less oil in it.

Finding specifics about the thing isn't as simple as it would seem. The Kawasaki service manual shows how to remove & re-install the breather cover, but that's about it. the info might be hidden somewhere, but I didn't see it. Lacking that, the parts diagrams & eebbaayy photos can be helpful for stuff like this, just to see what's what, then figure it out using a set of eyeballs. :)

Yeah, that's the thing... the parts diagrams don't show anything in there, and there was nothing in the three cases I have here were all empty, it just seemed strange that there was this empty hole. Every other spot on the engine, if there's a recess, something goes in it. Guess I'm just over-thinking it.

Yes, it's just a vent. The diagrams in this case aren't much help, but eebbaayy photos should shed some light on what's under the cover.
