I seem to go through about a litre(quart) of oil every 2000 Kilometer(1200 Miles), is this normal for a KZ1100 or not? It seems to run great, but if I went through that much oil in my SUV I would worry.

What kind of oil? I switched from Castrol GTX 20/50 to Rotilla and stopped burning oil. Valve guide seals will do that too.

I'm using 10W40 Royal Purple synthetic wet clutch motorcycle oil. I was thinking seals also.

I was using 1 QT every 400 miles and fouling plugs. I knew my seals were bad but I wanted to replace the valves, springs and seals all at once. I collected everything I needed as funds would allow and did it in two days. Valve train sings again but I still was burning a little oil. Switched to Rotilla and it stopped. I just put in 1/3 QT for the trip and I'm at the top line. Never had it so good. :woohoo:

Nobody wants to burn oil obviously, but 1200 miles to a quart is not bad on a KZ1100. Actually even if you buy a new car, 1000 miles to a quart is still considered whithin range. I'm like Steve, on my KZ1000 at 40,000 miles I was burning a quart every 400 miles and fouling plugs. In my case I just went ahead and did a valve job and first rebore and then no oil consumption. I know the 1981 and up KZ1000 and KZ1100 were always known as oil burning engines. They had some quality problems, but 1200 miles to a quart is no big deal for that bike.11
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

The early 1000's had steel valve guides. They were known and there was a recall finally. My neighbor was a dealer at the time. They made more money on factory jobs than tune ups.

Also depends on the temperature, my Z1r can go 4,000Km without a fill and the oil is just above the low mark. During the hot summer (around 35 degrees C temperatures) on a trip it might use that in around 3,000Kms
First Permanent ride the Z1R since Dec1977 (220,000km) as of June 2015
Second permanent bike 1989 FJ1200 dyno'd 140RWH, great bike.
Third ride is now the Frankenstein 1981 GPZ1100B1, getting new/ refurbished 83-84 motor soon
Forth my work bike FJ1200 1989 (same type as above)
