I don't know much about the 500/550 bikes but I do not believe the cam chain guides are driven in or out with the head heated, I would imagine they are similar to many other KZ's and those guides are on small shafts and easily pull out......please correct me if I am wrong anyone who knows a lot more about these bikes.....

I was talking about the valve guides. The cam chain guides can be inspected with the cams out.

FSM? What's that?

As Swest said, it is the factory manual sold by Kawasaki and used by dealerships and many independent mechanics. It is more complete and model specific than your typical aftermarket manual like the ones published by Haynes and Clymer.
