I mentioned on another thread there is a 550 available on CL. After going back and forth, it looks like I can pick it up for free. 2.5 hour trip one way and about $50 in fuel, no title and not running. Shops say it's not worth fixing so parts only. What do you guys think?

It looks whole and appears to be in good cosmetic condition. If getting a title doesn't take an act of Congress in your state I would buy it, fix the engine, and flip it.

Thanks Ed. I was thinking I could get it running even if it has a blown motor and Bossie would have a little sister.

I would make the trek for that!

Let us know if you get it! I would be surprised if the engine was bad. Most likely it didn't make sense to have a mechanic fix what needs fixing for a $100/hr.

Yeah and the back fees can be $600. I'm hoping it's the carbs even though they are CV carbs. Eech.
We'll see.

By the looks of that bike, you could part it out and it'd be well worth your time even if you can't fix it

I'd hate to do that, it's so pretty. Still it's a long trip and a gamble.

So your saying that you may have to pay up to 600 for it?

I'd say parts are worth the trip alone.

The kbb value on the early 80s 550s are about $1000 in excellent condition. They're fun and reliable so I let myself pay to maintain mine 3 times over

In the Socialist state of Californicate the DMV gets 3 years back fees and penalties and the CHP gets half. That's about $600 once it's all said and done. That can and may be the reason I'm getting this bike. That and the price of parts and labor can cost more than the bike is worth.
