Oil seals were shot and replace. Out gently with a claw hammer and driven in with a 33mm axle socket. Five minute job with two hours to get there and back. R

Idle issues remain. Once warmed up she will die unless I turn idle up to 1500 rpm. My thought here is two folds. 1. I did take the carbs out and clean, but didn't know there were two more pilot jets deep in the carbs. I did not clean those jet, everything else needed cleaning. 2. Carb synch is off? I do not have a manometer, can they be rented or is the Motion Pro 80$ jobber decent enugh? Anyway loving the bike will get some pics today as she is more shiny than ever now. R

You don't use them very often but when you do, they're worth their weight in gold. One carb cleaning and tune up for a friend, they will pay for themselfs twice over.

Some on here prefer the Morgan carbtune over the Motion Pro........ Its a few bucks more but it has no fluid to evaporate so that's what I picked.

I have mercury gauges I bought 20 years ago. Had a friends KZ 650 suck up some, I held my breath, shut it down and walked away.

Don't get the Motion Pro junk tool whatever you do, it's Chinese garbage at its finest. The Morgan Carbtune is made in England and fantastic. The old Motion Pro mercury carbstix that we all used in 1978 were fine, but those new things are no good. I'll leave it at no good and be done with my comments, but on a scale of 1 to 10, they rate a .0001.

rrsmsw9999 wrote: Well, headed on a ride this evening. Things are coming along well.
new oil
filter change
front brake fluid flushed
rear brake inspected
front and rear wheels inspected - bearings, seals and grease good.
throttle cables lubed and adjusted
cleaned and new grease on the throttle tube
carbs in and mounted correctly
chain/sprockets inspected, lubed
makeshift outer air box tubes out of 1 1/2 hose until my package arrives from Z1.

Impressions
A. It is running well. Starts easy (1 kick if kicked), idles right, power in all gears, runs right up to 100mph+
B. Handles better than I remember on my old 550. nimble, tracks straight and oves to dive into turns. Great ground clearance.
C. People remember and love these bikes, lots of comments and attention.
D. The old windjammer Kaw windshield offers good protection

More to do
A. Petcock (gravity) is leaking, will rebuild.
B. Pegs on the engine guard rattle a bit.
C. Every so often the first throttle blip will lower idle RPM, but it does not stall. Hoping the stock air box tube will cure this, or perhaps it is idle adjustment.
D. Fork oil seals weeping a bit.
E. Deep clean
F. Tank dent removal, glue should do well.
G. Pipes are bit loud and decayed for me. had to rivet the baffle abck in. Think 4-1 as long as I can keep the center stand.

Went about 80 miles, all was as it should be. Fun Fun Fun. A few pics.

I'm still all worked up over the thought of the Motion Pro "tool", and must vent so here is the review: Open the package and see the proudly made in China lable. I paid $100 for this? Well maybe it works. Add the liquid, Add the restrictors to the hoses. Talk about restrictors, these restrict a 5/32" hose to .015" or whatever. I thought right then, a .015" hose is going to be clogged by all logic isn't it? Sure enough 2 of the 4 would flow no vacuum, so I tried to blow them out with an air compressor, but blowing through a .015" opening is rather difficult. I finally get all 4 to flow, so on to the next step which is to synchronize the tool. This is connect all 4 hoses together to a single vacuum feed to make sure all read the same. I hook them up and all 4 are different by a bunch, and on top of that there are air bubbles in every hose. Back to the Chinese instructions that say. If you see air in line you will see none if you shake the tool. So I shake the tool. This does zero except all the manifold adaptors fall in the dirt and I still have multitudes of air bubbles. I finally get the bright idea to try to blow backwards through the lines. Of course you can't blow through .015" restrictors, so I remove them, blow through the hoses, and what happens then is most the liquid is lost, but the air hubbles are gone. Now I reinstalled the restrictors and find one is permanently clogged but I was able to syne 3 lines, just barely, so use a 3 line carb sync tool to try to sync 4 carbs. Get the job done by swapping hoses around. Now I call Motion Pro, and they say how mercury is outlawed, so we get this new tool. They send me a new tool. Now this tool can't freeze, so I keep it in the house. Delicate workmanship needs delicate handling. I go to use the new tool a year or so later and find 100% of the liquid has evaporated. They searched far and wide, and succeeded in finding a liquid that evaporates 25 times faster than tap water.OK rant over, review over. DON'T BUY.

Saying goodbye to this remarkable machine. 1200 miles ridden and a moderate return on my investment and effort has her going to a new home today. The new owner chose well, this bike has a lot of miles left in it. Just finding two motorcycles a bit unneeded when I have two young men in college. Great fun bike!. I encouraged the new owner to make connection with this forum as I have found it to be the best one out there for the KZ650. Thanks for the help and encouragement. Farewell, until I find another. R
