Hey everyone
I bought a second KZ550 a while back that I've slowly been working on. I checked the valve clearances and while I was putting the valve cover back on I noticed the previous owner had somehow driven the cam end valve cover bolt through the bottom of the head. Is this something a machine shop would be able to fix or is the entire head ruined?

It should not be a problem at all. Check to see if the other holes for the cam end valve cover bolts go all the way through. I suspect you'll find that they do; I know they do on the KZ650.

Is the bolt actually sticking through the bottom of the hole? If so, the owner used too long a bolt. He may have done that on purpose to gain more purchase on the threads if he overtightened the original bolt and stripped the upper section of the threads. Ed

Thanks for the replies. Here's a photo of the broken pieces. Both sides look the same and are broken in the same way. The front cam ends appear to be unbroken. Will the engine hole oil like this or is it something that will need to be repaired before it can run?

I've had this before, not worth scrapping a head for imo.

just add some sealant on the rubber cam boring blanking inserts if it leaks.

It looks bad, but might not leak. If you put in the correct bolts you may want to patch the broken sections with some JB weld to see if that will hold up ok. Ed

The same holes on a 1100 J-model were not factory-tapped all the way through, on the two heads I have. While chasing threads, they were carefully finished out through the bottom to allow for slightly longer bolts. :)

If you look close that bolt boss is not done breaking.
In the pic there's two cracks I can see.
one from the bottom of the rubber plug and one next to it
that run's up to the valve cover surface.
They could be welded without pulling the head.

Thanks zukdave. I completely missed that. I just went outside to check it out and it doesn't appear to be a crack. It looks like the head may have been welded before and someone used a grinder to hide that it had been welded.
