I have a 1977 1000. Recently after riding from one coast of Florida to the other coast, I started having some clutch issues. Basically the clutch became very crunchy after running perfectly fine the day before. It seemed to have troubles releasing and then grabbing the gear. I had changed the oil the day before my trip and clutch ran perfect. I figured I would jump on this site and get some direction. Upon getting the bike home and then running it around the block, the clutch worked just fine.

It seemed to have troubles releasing and then grabbing the gear.

Had this and it turned out to be a clutch friction plate delaminated - although coincidental that you changed the oil previously. Unsuitable oil usually results in slippage.

Could it be a shitty clutch cable pre-fail?
