So I have oil leaking essentially right above my right spark plug. I'm ordering the cylinder head cover gasket and was wondering about one more thing. In the partzilla part diagram, found here...

www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/...KZ400+-+D/parts.html

can someone verify that there is no actual gasket between the cylinder head cover (#20) and the cylinder head, barrel (#28). I assume that the clear silicone is the only thing needed?

You may find the oil leak is actually from the tach drive and that you should replace parts 11, 13, and 22. That is a very common leak on KZ's. Ed

Thanks, 650ed. I've added all three of those parts you listed because I know I have signs of a leak at the tach. cable. So is that a "no" regarding an actual gasket between the two?
