Well it figures...riding season is finally upon us here in SW Ohio, and after behaving herself both last season, and the few sufficiently warm days this year, "Bluella" has picked now to start acting up! AS the subject line indicates, she is runnning rough...Spent most of last weekend on her, no problems! I took her to the bank at lunch today, and it feels like 2 cylinders are cutting in and out...all the way across town and back! Spritzed water drops on headers when I got back home, and all sizzled, but if I had let go of the bars with my left hand, (the way she is jerking as the affected cylinders kick in) it would have yanked me sideways off the road! She did it yesterday at lunch as well, and then I took her out after work, and after a few miles, she settled down, and we had a nice little ride...WHat the !@#$ could cause this? One of my original coils finally taking a dirt nap? Ring any bells for anyone? As always, thanx for any assistance !

Hi Grumpy, All I can do is tell you about my experience. Mine started surging at highway speed after I had put in new jetting and adjusted the floats. It would accelerate fine after I stop and go again. So I readjusted the floats to make sure not too much gas was filling the bowls. I figured the surge was caused by access fuel which the surge was burning off. And at the same time, I also went back to smaller main jets from the ones I just had put in. Not back to stock (Pods and Kerker instealled), but smaller than what I had just put in there. This solved my problem. So the bottom line is, I'm not sure which was the cause, the float levels or the jets. Your symptoms may be different altogether. If that's the case. Give a good description. Does it accelerate normal? Does it surge when trying to maintain a constant speed?

Honestly, it acts like a cylinder (or two) are cutting in and out...Off the line is terrible, no power...Will not accelerate normally...when maintaining constant speed, it runs like crap, backfiring, and sputtering...every 3 seconds or so, it starts producing power for a split second, then goes back to poo...Jeff S at Z1 recommended the jets I installed...she was running pretty well...Just wondering what could cause an intermittant problem like this, as it ran fine last night after work?????

could be electrical. Maybe a bad coil or loose wire. I would ensure that the wires going to coils are together tight. Check the coils to see if theyre good. Testing is cheap.

I will definitely start with the connections...Can autozone test bike coils?

you can test them your self with a multimeter.
Scroll down and a couple posts and youll see where MFOLKS was nice enough to do a write up on how to do it.

Thanx powersroke! I am still rolling points though...checked all the connectons at the coils. Replaced a pretty rich looking set of plugs. No change. Checked the FSM for info...my POS meter has none of the settings mentioned..pulling them & shlepping them to autozone (along with my FSM) hopefully, they have a better meter. I know I just need to replace them, but not the best timing...could be stranded out on the road though...could be worse! Thanx all! Ride safe

It turns out that autozone DOES in fact have a better multimeter...results kinda inconclusive...coils bench tested at about upper 2/3 of acceptable ranges both primary and secondary circuits...plug caps tested from 4.63 up to 5.4 ohms....doesn't rule out hi volt insulation breakdown or layer shorts, but since the problem is present at cold startup on kinda rules out temperature failure...I hate troubleshooting, LOL!

When is the last time you replaced the points? Is it possible one set of contacts is pitted to the point where it is affecting ignition to the coil it fires? Ed

Battery tested fine...12.5 volts...held 200 amps under load...checked at coils...hot lead from meter to yellow/red wire powering coils...black lead to battery ground...got 11.13 volts at coil...is this drop sufficient to cause my problem? Have taken apart/ deoxit scrubbed EVERY connection from front to back of bike. What am I missing? Thanx! Ride safe

Ed, I don't ingnore ANY of the advice I get around here, least of all from you, LOL! I did go ahead and pull timing cover...Everything still looks shiny & new...going to do forum search...try to determine what is actual acceptable minimum voltage at the coils...defiinitely losing a volt or two here & there...I measured a drop just across my kill switch of .5 volt or so...And that was measured after pulling it apart, and deoxit cleaning! Is it possible that the coils are in fact the problem, despite passing their bench tests?
