Hopefully someone wan help with an easy fix,....

I finally got my new MTC 72mm pistons in and the weather is getting nice. So I put about 200 miles on the new pistons/rings and all of a sudden the bike back fires a couple of times then stalls. I just replaced the cam chain also so I am thnking that it must have slipped a tooth,...at least that is the symptoms.

So I start pulling the engine apart and I remove the advancer cover and out comes a piece of metal,....it was the advancer key. The engine is not stuck,...it is turning via kick start and the cam chain still appears to be in place. Of course I cannot check the timing because the advancer is spinning freely.

So I believe the advancer key missing in the pic is what is causing my problems,...so my question is how easy is it to fix this key or replace it?

Thanks for your help,...I am hopeing to hear that I do not have to tear apart the bottom end for this fix :woohoo:

Take a look at the diagram below. It sounds like the part marked #14 somehow came out of the hole. If that is true, and if the hole is not deformed you may be able to just drive another one in there. The part is still available, so any dealer can get it. I believe it's what I've always called a "roll pin"; Kawasaki calls it a "spring pin" - same thing I think. You may want to put a bit of Loctite on it. It should be a tight fit in the hole.
If a piece broke off in the hole it will need to be removed before trying to put in a new one.

Yes that is the part that fell out. I will have to take a good look at it and see if it broke off or just fell out of the hole. I'll order a new one and hopefully have it figured out by the time the replacement comes in. Thanks.

I have had this happen before and luckily found a roller from a universal joint cap that was the right size and used it.

It is still in there after 15 years.

Rob b boy d, do you have any recommendations? Or did you just hammer in the new part you found. I ordered the replacement part already so I have wait for that. How deep was the hole, I am having a hard time determining if the old part broke or just cam out.

I think the hole is maybe 6-8mm deep.
A spring pin is the same as a split pin, like a toilet paper roll with a cut running the full length.
A roll pin is like a newspaper rolled up, usually two or three layers.

Hardware store will probably have the one you need.

If there is a piece of the old one in the hole, screw a sheet metal screw into it and use pliers to pull it out.

When I snapped mine off, it broke flush with the end of the crank. It is a VERY LIGHT press fit. The hole is probable only 6 mm deep. My guess it came out and was never put back in. As far it breaking off, it would shear flush with the crank, not deep in there. I think you'll be fine that when the new pin arrives, just shove it in.

Thanks for all the inputs. I got home today and took a good look at it. It broke off almost flush with the edge. So I went out and bought a small drill bit and slowly drilled out the piece that was still stuck in the hole. After a little bit of drilling it basically fell out. And yes the hole is about 6 - 8 mm deep.
With these old bikes I have gotten better at removing broken and stripped bolts. :silly: .

So I have a new split pin on order from bike bandit. So when it comes in it should just be press it in and hopefully the bike will be ready for riding again now that the weather is getting nice.
