First, remove the 4 plugs on the head the gain access to the rocker arms.
Turn the engine over to bring the pistons to the top of the stroke. You can
either use the timing plate or pull the plug to check for crankshaft position.
Both pistons rise and fall together. So when at the top of the stroke one will be
on compression. Both valves will be closed and lash can be checked. The
other will be on overlap. Those valves will be open slightly and tight with
no lash. Check valve lash. If out of spec, then you need to adjust your valves.
Loosen the lock nut and turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise. Insert
feeler gauge and rights screw till it's lightly seated on the gauge. Tighten nut
and you should feel a slight drag when the gauge is removed. Sometimes it
will take a few attempts to get it right. When tightening the nut it might change
the valve clearance slightly. Do both valves one the cylinder on compression.
Then spin the crank one rotation. The other cylinder will be on the compression
stroke. Adjust those valves to spec. Recheck both cylinder to confirm they stayed
set and did not change. The quick way to get lash 'in the ball park' without a feeler
gauge is a 1/4 turn out. Seat the screw and back it out 1/4 turn. This will get you
close enough to get you home or temporarily to perform other adjustment.
