was lucky to be able to fit the steering damper in front of the fork as the oil cooler wouldnt have let me fix it to the front down tubes

after looking at the bike for three months from a distance of not more the 3 feet in my small garage, i finally mounted the tires. Time to roll it out and get some perspective.

days like this keep your motivation high and that sinuous waist line is definitely growing on me :)

You'll have to relocate the clipons to accomodate your long frame - it looks to suit me... and i'm half your size

of course that i also sat on it and man! it fits me perfectly as is, specially compared to my cramped 500.

The tank is quite long, so a bit of a stretch to the bars actually but i am glad to have room to tuck down at last.

Should ask my girlfriend to take a picture with me aboard.

bike is pretty tall too, shame that i have to fit the engine, it feels really light like that ;)

Coming along nicely! Are you going to run it naked or with a fairing?

First off, nice build!

With the frame strengthening, does the stock gas tank still fit, or did you have to modify the underside?

MOMBA2 is has made the following modifications to their '84 GPz550 Racer's frame, but had to modify the underside of the tank:

The back of the frame, they cross-braced with tubing. Can't locate that picture.

Good luck on the build and racing season.

Found the page from the article that shows the cross-bracing on the back side of the frame(upper right), and they also made the tail section removeable.

Have made similar X bracing in the past, and will do so also on the GPZ, just lighter :) check the early pictures and youll see four ears i've welded in that area. I am going to bolt there a 1/8" ally plate that will do a similar job.

not sure as to why they did the removable frame as it doesnt really reduce weight or increase rigidity. maybe it has to do with the fact that they mix and matched an earlier 550 front frame with a later uni track suspension, don't know...

considered doing it too but a quick check showed that the whole steel rear subframe weights 4 lbs while a replacemnet ally one + mounting hardaware would be 2 lbs in the best case.

As i work all alone and dont have a team of people doing stuff for me just, it was not worth the effort in my book.

Not sure our rulebook would have allowed it either. here in italy they are really into the period look thing and modern forks, 17" wheels, and many other modifications that never existed back then are not allowed. I actually like the fact that it is true vintage racing rather than vintage/modern Frankensteins :)
