Nice work turboguzzi! I like the use of the GSXR rear shock. Is it from a 750 or 1100? Looks just like the 750 shock that I have used on the testarossa streetfighter. We even mounted the nitrogen reservoir in almost the same place. I'm sure that you already know this but Racetech has all the parts to rebuild that shock if need be. I did mine myself, it wasn't really all that hard.

If it hasn't been rebuilt yet then it will need it. Mine had zero nitrogen pressure and the oil was nasty. It had almost no dampening. Not too good for a racebike. 1000% improvement with the rebuild. Anyway here's the link to my writeup of the rebuild, it might just help: kzrider.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&...98379&catid=5#398379

hi testa

nice post

a couple of questions

what spring rate did you go with? did you have problems with the stock gsxr spring?

I expect my bike to weight in at 165kg / 360 lbs. that's quite bit lighter than either stock gpz or gsxr

didnt you rebuild the main shaft seal? i think i need to do that on the spare shock

heard there is shock specific oil as fork oil has strong additives to swell the seals. have you tried to find one?

Wow your bike is going to be really light. My spring rate would not be any good to you. I set my rear suspension with the same pickup points as the GSXR. I had the GSXR next to the KZ as I was measuring. Since the rear suspension is basically a complete 1995 GSXR 750, I went to racetech's calculator here: old.racetech.com/evalving/menu/searchstreet.asp

You punch in your info here and it suggests spring rates, and oil weights for your application. So I picked a 95 GSXR 750 and lied to the calculator. I told it that the bike weighs 500 lbs (guessing, and hoping that it winds up a little lighter.) and that I weigh 235 lbs. (Actual.) This gave me a rear shock spring rate of 7.94 Kg/mm, so I selected the closest at 8 Kg/mm IIRC. You will obviously come up with drastically different numbers unless you're a big sombitch.

All of the seals in my shock were in very good condition, so none needed replacement. The only thing that leaked out was the nitrogen, and considering the design, I'm not sure that it could hold that amount of pressure for any great length of time. Actually, if you do rebuild yours, I would be interested to know if it did retain any pressure. Most people that I have spoken with, who have rebuilt their shocks had no pressure. I'm going to do my zx-10r someday, and we'll see about it too.

No, I did not try and find shock specific oil. I used regular fork oil. Racetech recommends the same for shocks or forks. I was un-aware of this possibility.

I am 6'4" but not that big in other directions :), only 180 lbs...

on the other hand a road racer needs higher rates due to the high cornering forces, so lets see, maybe the weight removal will bring rate to the right balance, will have to experiment on track

The amount of heavy crap i removed from the bike is nothing short of amazing, no wonder,

it's a Kawasaki HEAVY Industries product after all :)

That's cool that you were able to take that much weight off the bike. Heck my zx-10r weighs more than that.

If you use the Racetech calculator that I linked, it gives you recommendations for race or street, and yes the race spring rates are higher.

Looks like you may need to find a 7.5Kg/mm spring. Stock is 6.2Kg/mm. It may be a little mushy with the stock spring in there.

OK, thanks

Have a GSXR1100 spring too, that should pretty stiff if I do need one.

How does your bike handle after this suspension mod?

Had a look at your build, pretty impressive!

So far, I love the way it handles. It's not the corner carver that my ninja is, but it doesn't need to be. I promised myself that I wouldn't put it on the road until it was done. At this point, all of the riding has been under 60 mph. Once the paint is done, I'll have it inspected and then I can get it on the highway. I'll let you know once I get to hit some fast sweepers and such. One thing that I really love is the fact that this thing eats bumps for a living. So much more plush ride than my ninja. I envision this bike as more of a grand tourer, and that's how it's working out. If I were racing it, I would try and shed some more weight, try and raise the height, raise the motor, and generally shoot for more cornering clearance. I have touched the header on the pavement while taking a right hander that I usually take at a pretty good clip on the ninja. So it seems to turn in well enough on the slower corners, but lacks the cornering clearance of the newer bikes.

Hopefully if all's well we'll push start you at Magione this coming May. I enjoyed this thread very much, I always enjoy a good technical mumbo jumbo.
