Tom W, I know we are all still trapped in the past but, I am getting to realize that a journal will only get coffee spilled on it perhaps many other things , even lost. A digital journal. Can even be made to look like a cyber real journal.
Just popping my two cents. Tri, good job man on getting these guys in to the idea.

So true. I'm a dinosaur and ride a dinosaur bike. I wouldn't think a log could get lost any easier than a flag, but the spilled coffee, mud, tire tracks, blood, whatever, tells a story that can't be recorded in bits and bytes. Ride along participants would probably like having their names recorded along with the year make and model of what they rode. Support vehicle drivers and passengers too. If some relayer could draw and wanted to sketch something they could do that too. I don't think a limit on space used should be placed on participants. I would have a hard time filling a half a page or more poking my finger at my smart phone. When the relay is over someone could transcribe the whole thing for the world to read or it could be done as we go along.

Every voyager I can think of has kept a log. Heaven forbid something should happen to the KZR servers, we still have a record. Spiral notebooks are dirt cheap and available everywhere. Keeping a paper log is part of the fun.

a coffee table book could be made of it. anyone in that line of work? I myself like to ride with minimum luggage and wasn't too keen on the idea of a notebook but now I'm thinking it's probably not a bad idea at all.

We wait to see where the second leg starts and where it goes. If it starts down south and moves north, leg 3 will go north to south. If it starts up north and goes south we switch to plan 'B'.

Some of the best riding in Wisconsin is the SW corner of the state, not far from Iowa City. Just scoot up Hwy 151, about 2 hrs. cross the Big Muddy and enjoy the great twisties. Actually, anywhere along the Mississippi should be good. I kinda like our side though.
I'll be heading to NM in August. The route is unplanned. I may be carrying the flag somewhere, who knows? Final destination is Las Vegas, 65 miles east of Santa Fe. We'll get together somehow. You are the planned kick-off for the Western leg, don't get lost!

Yep I've spent some time in a cage bombing through the backwoods road of Wisco. Haven't made it up on the bike yet, might head over towards Dubuque/Moline and take a long ride up the river. If I'm guessing, you're heading to the Las Vegas rally (what is it, the iron butt rally? can't remember). You're in Harley country around these parts of the SW for sure. I'd reccomend you make the rest of the trip to Santa Fe and the head north through Taos. I also hear Durango is a good ride from NM, might be pretty warm that time of year though.

As for the rally, I guess I'll just stay tuned. Waiting on some parts and tools for a valve adjust and new tires so I'm ready when the flag finally gets in my sweaty little hands

Durango to Silverton is an awesome ride,I got to the top of the pass and shut off my bike and rolled for 12 miles down into Silverton.

Nothing like it.

Ok so the flag is in R.I. I will put some pics up in the pics thread. I met Mike in Waterford Conn. We met at his friends house. We were both running about a half hour early and ended up getting there about 10 minutes apart. We met new friends, and hung out a while. The ride home was scenic 1A along the water. It was a nice overcast day, perfect for riding.

Great ride guys! Great pictures. Looks like you had an enjoyable day. What's planned for the next meetup? Will it be going to Nova Scotia to Heyst? T-Dub, still planning on taking the ferry on the 23rd? Hope it all works out for you.

I wanted to give everyone and update on the East Coast leg. We're in a bit of a bind trying to find a rider for Maine so we can connect up to Canada and get this to Cape Spear Newfoundland.

We've now had four individuals sign up or express interest who have fallen through for one reason or another. In some cases bikes broke down or got sold, in others people just seemed to vanish after initially saying they could help.

What we've done so far to find a rider:
  • Posted two ads on Craigslist for Maine
  • Emailed every Kawasaki dealer in the state asking if they know anyone that rides a vintage bike
  • Emailed half a dozen people in Maine selling vintage Kaws on Craigslist in the hopes they could help out (or would know someone)
  • Posted to the Maine Motorcycle Network (www.mainebiker.net)

I'm at a bit of a loss of what else to do and would appreciate any suggestions. We got a response to one of the CL ads, but that person hasn't responded to any subsequent emails.

We're in a bit of a crunch. The relay is in Massachusetts with a rider willing to ride up Maine. We've got a rider from Newfoundland who has to take a ferry and already booked his ticket for the 23rd to get to the mainland. If we miss the window on the 23rd it'll be a couple weeks, maybe a month before he can make the trek again.

If you have any ideas for locating a rider in Maine, please let me know.

Thanks!
Permanent and perpetual noob.

We may want to think about shipping the flag thru some of the areas we cant get help thru. Maybe a loose policy that if we cant get help within 2 weeks the flag gets shipped. I much rather see the flag flying from the handlebars across the USA, but my 2 cents is its better to ship than die on the vine.

Yeah there needs to be something of a time limit here, I'm theoretically the handoff from 3rd to 4th leg and at this rate it'll be sometime next year before I see that flag.

Let's get this thing going, best efforts have been made, if someone was willing they'd have stepped up by now. Stick it in the mail and lets get this show on da road! (many kudos to those riders who have thus far come through).

WELL, as sad as it may seem or be, and especially in view of the fact we're well into June, and the flag has a LOOooooong way to go to final destination - quite likely causing a substantial loss of other riders anticipating a faster travel...

PLUS other pretty large holes in the travel map ahead YET to be filled one way or another...

AND the fact that this neat idea envisioned that the flag be physically carried and handed off by RIDERS/OWNERS of the vintage Kawasakis it all revolves around - ALL the distance, without interruption or "substitutes"...

Perhaps should consider just cutting losses, and drop it for now - possibly for another time?

For sure, I don't see likelihood of the flag getting from the right coast to the left coast before adverse Fall/Winter weather conditions add their delays and stoppages to progress. Washington state and Oregon see cold/wet/icy weather pretty early in the Fall - and other northern states and BC do even more so.

Perhaps time for either an adjustment to expectations as to time frame - or a reality check as to whether we just bit off more than we can chew - to ME, substituting non-vintage bikes and USPS or FedEx for the originally planned carriers, sorta defeats the purpose, and dilutes the final outcome.

Sorry for the negative thoughts, but just sayin'...

I for one want to sign that flag, carry it in four states and meet/ ride with other members , if possible.

So what if there's gaps , maybe Guinness won't notice ;)

Way back in the thread it was anticipated that the flag may have to be shipped and one point or another. As a matter of fact, T_Dub is supposed to shipped form Canada to Mobile, Al for the start of the second leg. It has also been know that it can't be accomplished in one year. These facts have been lost due to the volume of the posts on this thread. I don't think we should miss the point of this whole relay. Personally I think its for members to be able to meet each other and to see these beautiful bikes in different settings and have it all photo essayed online for us to voyeur over (maybe bad wording here). Yes, it would be ideal if it can be done from KZ to KZ with each state include. But if not, no great shakes. Not the end of the world. I think we are going to have enough success to be able to enjoy this. I myself, have enjoyed the all the posts and photos so far. Hoping it keeps going. We'll get through Maine one way or another.
