I think that you're replying to Kidkawie's post.

I wouldn't use Pinesol on my carbs, and I'm not surprised that it turned yours gray, especially if you had them coated in it while still exposed to the air. I think Kidkawie had his totally immersed, which would help to greatly slow down the oxidation reaction.

If you look at the MSDS for Pinesol it has a pH of 2-3 in its undiluted form (it contains glycolic acid). Anything that acidic is going to eat up the surface. Most aluminum 'brighteners' that I've come across ARE acid-based; usually fluoroacetic, but if left on the surface for more than a few minutes and/or not neutralized properly, they will oxidize the heck out of the surface, turning it a gray to dark gray color.

before and after of the carb holders. As you can see the cleaner did take the rust off the choke lever

Thanks, Eddie.

Maybe that's a 'dead spot' in your tank causing the problem. I'm not saying that you have a transducer going bad, but that the way parts are laid out in the basket can apparently affect the effectiveness of the ultrasonic wave patterns.

I had no chance to drain my tank and test the colloidal/micelle solution last night or tonight (Kids' dramas, etc.,) but I'm hoping to have some idea by the end of this weekend. More to follow!

Thanks for subscribing Stev-o!

I only sold my first-born into a month or two of slavery for the Doremi repros/MRS exhausts. Didn't kill him. Probably made him stronger.

Should I need to raise some more cash for Z-1 parts, then I have a '78 CB750-K8 with less than 8K miles that might have to find a new home ...

Activity might be slow for the next week or so.

I'm waiting on my new 'fat' compressor while deciding on the extent of the head rebuild needed. (valves/springs/guides - three-angle seat rehab, cam bearings etc.) Fun!!

Not sure why they turned black, tons of info and pics online using it with no issues. I did a set of Z1 carbs that were sitting for 15 years, came out great.

Well - it's been quite a while since I had any time to work on the bike. I finally had some spare time this weekend - and a couple of helpers at hand so I decided to take out the engine/trans and get it bolted into the K & L stand.

I'm going to tear it down to the bare casings over the next week so that I can strip the silver paint off and vapor blast them back to the original raw aluminum finish.

Feels good to be working on her again!

Had a few hours of free time this weekend, so I finished the tear down (all but 1 selector fork - it's getting late).

Next will be stripping off that ugly, stained silver paint on the casings, courtesy of one of the POs, then vapor honing to return them to the original raw aluminum finish.
