Pretty cool!
I just bought a 1981 Kz 550 ltd. as well! It's my first bike and i'm planning on working a lot on it... Do you remember when you took everything apart, did you have to take the carbs off to get the air filter unit out?

You do need to remove the carbs to remove the airbox, but the air filter is easy to remove if that is all you plan to refresh. Are you planning on removing the whole airbox, and if so why - possibly some wild desire to become a carb guru or maybe your trying to tone down the bike's performance? Ed

Yes you do need to remove the carbs tfirst before removing air box, whilst you have it apart if it has not already been done it may pay to check the condition of rubber boots and inlet manifold rubbers for cracks, perishing Tec. Otherwise you can get vacuum leaks causing problems.

Yes does seem high, sorry have not done any real monitoring on fuel consumption yet, but I am sure it will improve for you after you have done some more work on the bike. cleaned and synched the carbs etc.

I have to second what Lou said, that color scheme is very appealing. Great build!
