last weekend my wife and i travelled to eureka springs ark.for our tenth wedding anniversary,on the z1r.well last year we rode to fayetville ark.for bikes blues and barbeque and plan to attend again this year.last year we just strapped a duffel bag on the tail piece and went.well i got a couple chips in my paint and some stress cracks.so i figured i would build a custom luggage rack that could be removed with a few bolts.i already have spacers behind my upper shock mounts to space my shocks out for the wide swingarm and wheel combo.so it was just to build some new steel ones(the old ones are alu.) and mill the holes out to slots so that they could be slid on and off the shock studs.then i machined out some spacers that would fit in the turn signal mount holes and countersunk the back side for c/s headed allen bolts.i also had to machine out some threaded bungs to bolt to that would get welded into the rack.i had some stainless 3/4 inch o.d. with an .065 wall and decided to use it.so i bent it all up and tacked it.then removed it and welded it all out and scuffed and shot some black on it.
i thought it turned out well, and it served it's purpose for 450 miles with a overstuffed duffel bag on it.
this pic shows the mounting points.

Excellent work Leon. It looks big on the bench, but painted black and mounted you hardly notice it. Testarossa will be inquiring I'm sure, since he has done some work with a removable luggage rack

That's mighty practical of you there Leon. Reminds me of something that I have seen before.

Originally I had the top rack really tight to my fender like yours, but since I added in my license plate holder it won't come out easily any more. I plan on raising it to allow it's removal without loosening the license plate. Here's the thread where it got mocked up. kzrider.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&...ew&catid=5&id=348190

I plan on adding provisions for saddlebags in the future. Stay tuned.

hey testa, great minds think alike  !or severly demented ones  .
i am not sure i had seen those pics of yours, but i had seen some of the very start of that thread.i just kinda went with it and let it go where it needed.the function was the main thing but i didn't want the form to look to ghastly.i bought some nylon saddlebags from atwoods(for horses)for $23.00 and was able to lay them under my seat and fold them over to pull them up tight to my seat and they worked out perfectly for my purposes.i hate the way anything extra looks but sometimes you just need more room.between the rack the saddlebags and the tank bag we can haul all the crap we need for three or four days and still bring some stuff back that we didn't take with us. funny how that works.

thanks for the kind words guys,
leon

She looks real sexy from the back! B)

And she's got a nice rack too! :silly:

Nice work, I think I might have to do something similar so I can do weekend trips without trashing my paint.
