Now I have a question. I ask this for the benifit of the group. Basically, I'm very close to the point that I will dismantle the mocked-up bike. So I want an opinion from everyone who follows my thread. Should I keep the entire build on this thread, or break it up into seperate phases? Since this thread has become soo long I realize that it could be difficult to search through, and find what you need. I'm thinking of leaving this as the mock-up thread. Then I would have seperate threads for the teardown and refinish, engine rebuild, reassembly, and final tuninig etc.

So please, anyone who is interested in my build give me your opinion. One thread or seperate threads. Also, how many are on dial-up. I know that everyone likes pictures, but some of my posts are picture heavy, and can be slow to load. Any other suggestions as to how to manage my flow of information are appreciation.

BTW if the concensus is to seperate the threads, then I can cross-link the related info.

OK, I know that it has been the better part of 3 weeks since I have actually accomplished anything on my build, but I have a few items that I worked on today.

I bought an AGM battery, so that I can lay it down flat. My original battery box is unusable since I have the mono-shock in its place.

Right now everything is just thrown in there, but I at least know that it all fits in between the side covers. I will clean up the harness and it will all be shrink wrapped after I install the new fuse box from Del City. I also got about a mile of heat shrink tubing when I ordered the fuse box.

One item of note to those who are bracing their frames. If you plan on using Dyna coils, then keep the cross braces on either side of the coil mounts. The Dyna coils are larger diameter than the stockers. I also had to add an additional washer under the original mounting hardware to keep the coil from rubbing the frame.

Does the fuel tank still fit on OK? Looks like close quarters for the rubbers in the front..

Yeah it still fits good. It's just the angle of that picture that makes it look that way. You know that I had to put the tank back on and play GarageGP last night.

Tough call on the tread. i find its nicer to follow the same thread so u dont have to go looking for another thread to see something from the past. your sep thread on fork rebuilds, and tire change, worked out well, since they were a separate subjct on there own too.
i dont know if it rely makes any dif. to the dial ups? they should chime in here. i think if u are on dial up, and a post is 10 pages or 20pages , it wont matter. Is'nt it just the page u are loading that takes the time? as a dial up member u can limit the # of replies to a page as well, so each pg. loads faster.
i find a lot of times the pics dont load when u click on them to enlarge them, or they aren’t any bigger .not your posts, in particular, ,just various ones.
if u do go with separate posts maybe u could put a link to any other relevant posts on the first page.

Josh, is that a stock sized battery, or did you get a different/smaller size to fit? It looks smaller......

I have noticed that by breaking up my build into a general project and chassis threads, there are members that follow one or the other, but not both, or do not know they are connected. That said, if I had kept them together the post count would be in the 600's.

Thanks guys, but I was hoping to get some answers from others than you two. I doubt that I have 9400 views from only you guys. So, if you are reading this, and your name is not porchev914 or mark1122 I want your input.

I did come up with a third option. What if I generated a clickable table of contents of sorts, and kept to one thread. I would need the help of the mods to place the TOC at the top, but it could work.

Adam, that is not a stock size battery. It is an ES14BS, Everstart Maxx AGM battery. I know its a Wal-Mart battery, but I tried to buy a correct sized battery at a couple of different places, including Cycle Gear locally, with no luck. So my decision to buy a Wal-Mart battery is purely practical. If you are on a motorcyle trip in the Texas Hill country, the one constant is the presence of a Wal-Mart. I would hate to be on a trip to Kerrville, and have the battery shit the bed. Then I would have to go to the one MC shop in town, or hitch a ride to Cycle Gear in San Antonio, and be told that they have to order a battery. Anywhoo, its smaller and has more CCA than the standard size Lead-Acid battery.

The bike looks to be moving along well, any ideas on when it will be finished?

And you can put me down as a vote for the table of contents idea. :)

i like to keep it all in one thread as long as it is all on the same project.it gets a little hard to keep up when they get separated.especially if (like me)you may not get on here over the weekends they can get lost.everytime i see "testarossa's 78 kz1000 fighter build"i know you done been at it and i got some new stuff to check out :) .
i am on highspeed during the week when i am on here and dial up when i get on in the evenings and weekends.the number of pages doesn't seem to slow the load time but the amount of pictures does.don't use less pics tho, cause thats what keeps us goin :cheer:.the toc could help folks on dial up get around a lil quicker.
theres my .02.
progress looks good, keep on keepin on!

It looks like one thread so far. I'll have to work on the TOC as I go along. Thanks guys, but keep the opinions coming for anyone who hasn't posted yet.

Well I managed to make a few sparks tonight. I did a little cypherin on Sunday and figured out how I wanted the base of the battery box. I got it bent up, and welded on some standoffs. This will serve as the mounting point for all the usual electrical stuff under the seat. Pictures:

In this last picture you can also see where I mounted the reservoir for the rear brakes. It's laid back a little, but I recon it'll do.

I'm keepin' it all southern for Leon tonight. Cause he's a swingarm bracin' sombitch!

just an idea...for ya...
when I was in florida with Velocity racing....all the guys down there removed the res for the rear brake...and replaced it with a 3" pice of clear house....and caped the open end with a piece of aluminum....
you could redily see the level of the fluid....and it opened up space for other stuff...ie. electronics...looked trick too!

like I said just an Idea for you

Alright! Some progress.....A least one of us is moving forward. So, by the looks of things, the new battery box is a non-removable unit. It's been 4 days, and I already miss my welder :( What are your plans for a battery hold down, and isolation material?

I like your sight tube idea Ben....hmmmmmm

Good idea Ben. I'm gonna use what I have unless it causes a problem.

Adam, at the moment, the battery box is just set in there. I'm leaving it out until I get all of the other stuff finish welded. I will weld it in place unless someone can convince me that there is a good reason not to. As for isolation material, it's all getting stolen from my original battery box. The plastic liner will be cut and laid flat on the bottom of the box. I also was able to salvage all six of the round rubber isolators. I figure two in front, two in back and one on each side. I haven't exactly figured out the strap, but I envision a metal strap held down by threaded studs welded to the outside of the lower box. Part of the top strap will serve as a mount for the Dyna 2000 box etc.

I think you would be ok as long as the tubing was fuel line ...or something resistant to brake fluiid/oil....

I have a pic around here somewhere....

the clear hose idea works really well when i was building my big bike i ran into an issue of where to put a full sized brake resiviour(can't friggin spell today you guy's know what i mean right) any way i remembered using a clear hose set up on a road racer i built for a guy so i used that. it works awesome doesn't leak and you always know how much brake fluid you have plus it dosent take any extra fabricating. no brainer way to do it.
