Not sure if this is where this belongs, but here goes. I am getting back into the KZ thing after too many years and have been looking for a bike. I can pick up an 81 GPz 1100 for a very good deal. It wont start as it sits (the guy says the FI controler is shot) but it turns over and all seems in place. Now the FI thing isn't a big deal as I would carb it anyway (back to my old school ways), but what do you all think of this one (81 GPz) in general? Good way to go? Or will I be sorry and should I just keep looking?

I like the looks of the 81 GPz and all I have read says it was as fast as my old KZ's (the stock ones anyway).

A large issue with converting the early GPz's to carbs is relocating the petcock on the tank. Carbs require more 'space' than the original FI and the original position of the petcock will interfere. Additionally, the pressure relief valve on the underside of the tank needs to be plugged. That said, BS34's from a KZ1100/1000 should be readily available on eBay. Personally, if I were presented with another early GPz1100, I'd jump on it. As an aside, if you are a patient man, entire used FI systems for the KZ1100B1 appear several times a year on eBay (very reasonably priced)...so you might consider a restoration too.

instead or carbs, you can buy a megasquirt ecm and retain the fuel injection. plus then you can set your own data parameters.
someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

I'd buy it if I had the coin.

Robinson Motorcycle has an '83 GPz1100 for sale I spotted last night. Not sure if the '83 FI system would fit.

"$1.100 will take this away. All original Kawasaki GPZ1100 with only 5,000km, was hit on the left side, completely Broken Crankcases and some other damage from being hit on the left side.

A great parts bike. This GPZ 1100 has electronics and EFI in perfect shape, plus lots of great original GPZ1100 parts.

A nice early GPz I saw at a local meet:

I bought a 1982 GPZ1100 new and really loved it, but it was worn out in a year. Not near as well built as earlier KZ1000s. I'd still get another if i had my chance though. It really ran good and that stock seat was really great for long rides.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I saw the wrecked 83 the other day while surfing. I would love to pick it up, but I am afraid the shipping and getting it into the states would be enough $$$$ that it wouldn't be worth it.
I found this 81, but the only other thing I see here local is 900 Ninja's. They are all right as well, but I am still in the old school street fighter mode so the KZ/GPz's are the bike for me I guess.
I am going to talk to the guy Sunday (he's about 110 miles from me) again about the 81 so if we reach a deal it will be mine. Thanks for all the info and I would really appreciate any more advise/info that anyone has to offer.

Might not be the computer that's the problem. It could be a relay that's failed. When the key is turned on, does the fuel pump run?
