Cafe Racer project
Some years ago I started a project of turning a '76 kz 400 into a cafe racer. I got tired of all the Honda 350s and wanted something diffrent.
I just restarted the project again and am about to crack the bottom end so I can replace the cam chain. Looks pretty straight foward but I
havn't done one before so I'm checking for advice before hand.
Heads, cylinders, ect have all been done.
Thanx, emp

Interesting project empster, looking forward to see some pics.
If you are to replace the camchain, replace the cam chain guides aswell. You will have to split the crankcase again if you are going to replace the
guides(at least the one in front), so you might aswell do it now. It should be a straight forward job, but you will need a workshop manual so you can
get the balancer on the crankshaft correctly timed, and also the camshaft timing.
Another opsion is ty buy a cam chain with a master link. That way you can replace the camchain without splitting the cases and taking off the
cylinders and the head.
There has been a discussion on this forum about the safety of that master link a while back.

Yeah ibsen I didnt want to use a masterink
don't trust them in this application.
So Know where I can get the new chain guides? Can't find the breather cap either.
I'll try to get some pics up soon, there are some pretty cool mods.

I think Baer1911 has a NOS breather cap for an early 400. If you are talking about the part on top of the engine that the breather tube attaches
to.
I have 2 NOS cam chains if you need one.

I know we have at least one guy around here who has used masterlink cam chains in racing and has NEVER had a problem with any of them over the years.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanx clauson but I have the new chain allready
so I'll go ahead and install it. The plastic runners on the cam chain guide didnt look like anything special so maybe I'll just fab one up
as well.
But if that cat who has the extra breather is on gimme a holler. I'm intrested.

Check those chain guides, they might still be useful, but there are one for sale on Ebay at the moment:

I have got a used breather cover(needs cleaning and polishing) and a used rear cam chain guide that are in decent condition, if you are interested.
