Zephyr question...

Can anyone tell me if any other Kawasaki models have interchangable parts with Zephyrs? Someone told me the ZR-7 parts can be used. What else can anyone say about the Zephyrs? I've always liked them and have found a 91 750 with 18k miles. Thanks!

Smokey is right, the ZR-7 is the latest incarnation of the Zephyr, which is a KZ based motor. They share a lot of parts. I have a 92 750 and it also can use some ZX6 parts.
Carbs are crap, especially with choke on. I put some GPZ carbs on mine and there was a big difference.
You'll get tires of the vagueness of the front brakes, they are floating rotors with floating calipers, a bad combination. Cam chain is big time loud when bike is cold and a manual tensioner is the ticket.

go here and check it out

Thanks! Actually found it for sale on Zephyr Zone, so very aware of the site. Also knew of the cam chain, and heard it when I looked at the bike. Seemed to quiet after it warmed a bit. What do you mean by the carbs being crap? Just not very effective or high-maintenance? Can you explain a bit more? I'm a bit of a newbie. Thanks!

One significant difference between Zephyr and ZR-7 is the twin-shock vs. single-shock. I like the shocks on the Zephyr, like the ZRX bikes. Old-school hot-rod looking piggybacks. Cool. Sometimes fashion beats function with me after all, I guess...

I believe the ignition system is quite different, too, not interchangeable with a KZ or GPz.

I think the Zephyr is a sweet bike that came out at a time when interest in new and hi-tech was at a peak, so the retro didn't play with the general public at the time. I still like the sportbikes it lost to, but I think it has a lot of character, and I imagine it would make a better day-to-day ride, as well.

Perhaps crap was a bit strong. Specifically, they seem to develop leaks prematurely and the thumbchoke seems to go either 80,000rpms or off.
Overall a good bike though. I still have mine and with 49K miles I did a top end and camchain, and she keeps rolling along.

alienrz... what kind of cam chain is it? Just curious... I had been looking at an early 90s type ZR... one of the bigger ones. The cam chains on newer bikes look totally different than my old KZ which looks kind of like a bicycle chain. Newer chains have more parts and are skinnier but as I said, the links are more complex and teeth are far smaller on any rollers and such.

Perhaps you're referring to the "hy-vo" chain. KZ 650s started out with the "bicycle" type chain (called roller chain) and when the KZ750 4 came out it had a hy-vo chain, which works more like a metal belt, made from multiple plates sort of alternately stacked. I believe newer 650s came with the hyvo chain. What's hy-vo stand for: high velocity?

This one in particular has 18k miles and is in reasonable shape. There are a few minor cosmetic flaws (normal stuff) and it could use a new rear tire soon. Maintenance has been regular and it runs quite well. Also comes with Cortech saddle bags, a tail bag, and a windshield. I think it can be had for about $2k. Does this sound like a good deal? Seems reasonable to me. Attached a pic.

IMO, unless the bike is just *amazing*, much more than $2 per cc is getting pretty expensive. That's a nice-looking bike, but for $2K, I'd definitely want two good tires on it.
